Regrettably, after perusing Vera Wang Bridal Spring 2013, I moved on to Oscar de la Renta.

Yes, what you’re looking at above are a select few of the 43 fo-r-t-y-t-h-r-e-e(!!) gowns sent down the ODLR runway. I cannot express my disappointment.

But I’ll try.

Top set, left to right:

Pre-Raphaelite garnet colored velvet for Spring? And those calla lilies? No.

David’s Bridal. And sad, sad tuberose. Who is doing these bouquets?

Laura Ashley bedspread. Get that thing off her head, she’s not Lana del Rey.

White rabbit fur for Spring? Again, who is doing the florals?

Bottom set, left to right:

Hmm, that looks like those funny crocheted fingerless gloves some sad cousin on Downton Abbey would wear. But in a gown.

Unoffensive and yet entirely unremarkable.

Tooth fairy Barbie.

Flamenco hooker Barbie.

I think that covers it guys! -RS (Images via WWD)

Oscar de la Renta: Resort 2011

We love when established designers who have shaped the history of fashion embrace cultural changes… in this case the land of the internet.  What better time to livestream your resort collection and show support for technological advancement than during internet week!  Oscar de la Renta just seems to get it, as he divulges his awe in the many ways to reach consumers with technology.  ”Why wait?” he says,” … there is an excitement in seeing something as it happens.”

The livestreaming of the show may be very 2010, but the collection itself evoked an “old school” French look.  We couldn’t help but think about actresses of the past such as Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn donning the beautiful dresses and separates.  Soft flowy skirts, ruffles, and light fabrics graced the runway, as wide belts created 50’s hour glass silhouettes.  Cropped knit cardigans, boucle jackets, and crochet cover ups were perfect layering pieces.  The navy hues and occasional stripes, with the canotier hats, really tied the French theme together.  And then there are of course the classic Oscar de la Renta gowns, with their fitted tops and billowy skirts.

If you missed the original livestream, don’t fret… it looks like they’re replaying it for the rest of the day.  An added bonus- 10 online shoppers have the chance to win a signed sketch from the collection!

Stream of Consciousness

One of the many legacies the late, great Alexander McQueen left is the live streaming of fashion shows. His extravagant and eerie “Plato’s Atlantis” (above) sparked an online revolution last season, and pushed forward, arguably, the most widely publicized collection of his career.

Last week in NYC, more designers jumped on the “live” bandwagon, including Reed Krakoff who launched his first collection very successfully by promoting his show on his site through Facebook. We know designers Burberry (they were actually first to stream last season in London) Michael Kors, Dolce & GabbanaRodarte and Oscar de la Renta and Louis Vuitton are already old pros; and it’s a pretty safe bet to say that many more will be swimming upstream for S/S2011.
